The Michelin Guide in Qatar: What's Actually Starred, and What's Worth Knowing
Qatar has had its own Michelin Guide since 2023. Here's what the stars, Bib Gourmands, and Michelin Selected actually mean — and which real Doha restaurants hold them.
How the guide works here
Doha got its first Michelin Guide in 2023, and it now runs an annual selection like any other Michelin market. Three tiers matter for a visitor: a Michelin Star (one, two, or three — Doha's current list tops out at one star per restaurant), Bib Gourmand (excellent food at a genuinely reasonable price, not a discount version of fine dining), and Michelin Selected (restaurants the inspectors rate highly but that fall just outside star or Bib Gourmand criteria — still a real recommendation, not a consolation prize).
One honest caveat worth stating upfront: Michelin's Doha selection is newer and smaller than its Paris or Tokyo guides, and the list is revised annually — treat this as a snapshot of the current edition, not a permanent ranking, and confirm current status directly with the restaurant before building a trip around it.
The one-star restaurants
Three restaurants currently hold a Michelin Star in Doha, each a genuinely different kind of night out. IDAM by Alain Ducasse sits inside the Museum of Islamic Art itself, pairing French-Mediterranean cooking with Qatari influence and one of the best dining views in the city. Jamavar, at the Sheraton Grand in West Bay, is Indian fine dining done with real technique rather than banquet-style excess. Alba, at Raffles Doha in Lusail, is Northern Italian — the newest of the three to the list.
Bib Gourmand: the better everyday booking
This is arguably the more useful list for an actual trip — real quality without a fine-dining price tag or a three-week reservation window. Doha's Bib Gourmand restaurants span Jiwan at the National Museum of Qatar (modern Qatari), Argan near Souq Waqif (Moroccan), Hoppers (Sri Lankan and South Indian, also near Souq Waqif), Isaan (Thai), Baron in Mina District (Mediterranean-Middle Eastern fusion), Berenjak on Al Maha Island (Persian), Fenyal on Gewan Island (traditional Middle Eastern), and Mila at Rosewood Doha in Lusail (Mediterranean-Levantine).
Michelin Selected — the deep bench
This is the largest tier and where most of the internationally recognizable names sit: Nobu, Coya, Zuma, Hakkasan, Morimoto, La Petite Maison, and Carbone all have a Doha outpost on this list, mostly clustered around West Bay and Al Maha Island in Lusail. If you already know one of these brands from another city, the Doha version is Michelin-recognized in its own right, not just an import trading on the name.
Frequently asked
Does Qatar have any two- or three-Michelin-star restaurants?
Not currently. Doha's Michelin Guide is a newer, smaller edition than long-established guides like Paris or Tokyo, and every starred restaurant on the current list holds one star. This can change with future editions.
Is Michelin Selected the same as a Michelin Star?
No. Michelin Selected means the inspectors rate the restaurant highly and consider it worth recommending, but it hasn't been awarded a Star or a Bib Gourmand. It's a real recommendation, not a lesser version of the other two.
Do I need to book weeks ahead for the starred restaurants?
For IDAM, Jamavar, and Alba, yes — book as early as you can, especially for dinner or a weekend. Bib Gourmand and Michelin Selected restaurants are generally easier to get into, but a reservation is still worth making rather than walking in.
