Doha has more free than people expect: museums, a planetarium, beaches, a library tour and a waterfront that never closes. Here is how to string them into days, using only places 25 North lists as free.
Every place in this guide is listed on 25 North with free entry or free general admission. Free does not always mean everything inside is free: a beach can be free while sunbeds, water sports and dinner are not, and a museum can be free while a guided tour or special exhibition has a fee. Where that applies, we say so.
The city is also built around the heat. From late spring through early autumn, plan the outdoor free options for early morning or after sunset and use the museums and libraries in the middle of the day.
Start at the Museum of Islamic Art. The galleries are free to walk through, and only the guided tour adds a fee, so you can take your time on the building and the collection without paying for either.
Then walk to Souq Waqif, which is free to wander (budget separately for food and anything you haggle for), and look in at the FANAR cultural centre and mosque near the souq, where the guided visit is free. Later, Msheireb Museums, four restored early-1900s houses, are free to enter and a good way to understand how Doha grew. Check the opening hours first: they close on Sunday.
Qatar National Library, in Education City, runs a free heritage tour through its collection of old books and early Arabic newspapers, and the building itself is worth the trip. Close by in Msheireb Downtown, Liwan Design Studios offers free public heritage tours of the former girls' school it occupies, and M7 runs free exhibitions.
Katara's Al Thuraya Planetarium is also free: a 30 to 45 minute dome show, but shows run on set days, so check the schedule before you go.
For the sea, Katara Beach has free entry (sunbeds and water sports cost extra), Al Wakrah Beach is a free family beach south of the city with shaded gazebos and a playground, and Simaisma Beach, further north, is quieter with shallow water.
In the city, the Corniche is a free waterfront path that is open around the clock, and Aspire Park is free and open 24 hours. In the evening, the Pearl's public promenade is free to walk, with dinner as the optional extra. For a longer day out, Al Zubarah, Qatar's UNESCO World Heritage site in the north, issues a complimentary entry ticket at the fort.
Pair one paid highlight with two free days instead of spreading small costs across every day. Eat at the souqs rather than in the hotel, and use the free public spaces for the evenings. Many of these places are close together, so the cheapest plan is usually also the most walkable one.
Are Doha's museums free?
Several are. In 25 North's listings, Msheireb Museums, M7, Qatar National Library and Al Khor Museum are free to enter, and the Museum of Islamic Art's general galleries are free, with a fee only for guided tours. Always check the venue's page, because exhibitions and tours can be charged separately.
Can I visit Doha's beaches for free?
Public beaches such as Katara Beach, Al Wakrah Beach and Simaisma Beach have free entry. Sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports are usually extra, and some beach clubs charge entry, so check which kind of beach you are heading to.
What is the best free thing to do on a hot day?
Indoor free options such as the museums, the National Library tour and the Al Thuraya Planetarium. Save outdoor walks like the Corniche for early morning or after sunset.
