One hour, half a day or a full day: which museums and heritage sites to pick, with the opening days that catch visitors out, drawn from 25 North's museum listings.
Museum weeks in Doha do not line up. The Museum of Islamic Art is closed on Wednesdays, the National Museum of Qatar and the 3-2-1 Olympic and Sports Museum are closed on Tuesdays, Mathaf is closed on Mondays, and Msheireb Museums are closed on Sundays. Most flagship museums open late on Fridays (around 1:30pm), and several stay open later on Thursdays.
The hours below come from each listing and can change around holidays, so confirm before you travel, particularly for the smaller heritage sites, which are listed with limited or unconfirmed hours.
Msheireb Museums is four restored early-1900s houses in Msheireb Downtown Doha, free to enter, each covering a different chapter of the city's history. M7, also in Msheireb, runs free design, fashion and technology exhibitions, and the Katara Art Center is a free contemporary art and workshop space inside Katara.
Al Koot Fort is a handicrafts museum in an Ottoman-era fort, five minutes' walk from Souq Waqif. Its hours are inconsistently reported, so treat it as a bonus if it is open when you are passing.
Pick one flagship. The Museum of Islamic Art is I.M. Pei's last major museum project, on its own island at the tip of the Corniche; go for the building as much as the collection. The National Museum of Qatar, shaped like a desert rose around the old royal palace, is a ticketed visit. Mathaf in Education City holds one of the largest collections of modern and contemporary Arab art, and is listed as free.
Qatar National Library, also in Education City, is free to wander, and the heritage collection is worth the stop. Pair Mathaf and the library for a single Education City trip.
Katara Cultural Village combines wind towers, courtyards, a 5,000-seat amphitheatre, the Katara Art Center and the turquoise-tiled Katara Mosque, and works as a whole afternoon. For something more interactive, the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, next to Khalifa Stadium, is a large, interactive sports-history museum.
For a longer day out, the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum is about 30 minutes outside Doha: a private collection built over decades, and its listing advises calling ahead.
Al Zubarah Fort and Archaeological Site, about 100 km from Doha, is Qatar's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, a pearling town frozen in place since 1811. In winter it is open Saturday to Thursday 9am to 5pm and Friday from 12:30pm; in summer it opens in the afternoon only.
Smaller sites include Al Jassasiya Rock Art, an open-air field of petroglyphs in the northeast, and Al Khor Museum, a free museum in a former police station worth a stop on the way to the mangroves. Barzan Towers is listed as under restoration with no confirmed reopening date.
Visitors can enter some mosques outside prayer times with modest dress; the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque, Qatar's largest, is listed with advance booking recommended. Public art is easy to fit in: Louise Bourgeois's Maman stands at the Qatar National Convention Centre, and Richard Serra's East-West/West-East sits in the desert at Zekreet, where a 4x4 is recommended.
