Northwest Qatar, ~100km from Doha
Al Zubarah Fort and Archaeological Site
The original town burned and was abandoned in 1811 and nothing was built over it afterward, which is exactly why archaeologists rate it so highly: it's one of the best-preserved examples of an 18th-century Gulf trading town anywhere. The fort you actually walk into dates to the 1930s and was a police post, not part of the original settlement — worth knowing before you go.
