Maman (Louise Bourgeois)

Maman (1999) is a bronze, stainless steel, and marble spider standing over 30 feet tall, one of an edition of Louise Bourgeois castings sited in cities worldwide, including the Tate Modern and the Hermitage. Its abdomen carries a sac of 32 marble eggs; Bourgeois described the work as a tribute to her mother, a tapestry restorer, comparing her weaver's patience to the spider's own.
