Ras Rakan sits at the very northern tip of Qatar near Al Ruwais, a low, T-shaped islet close enough to shore to wade to at low tide, and one of the country's main hawksbill turtle nesting sites. It's a designated nature reserve for picnics, camping, birdwatching and stargazing between October and April, with no commercial facilities of any kind, so everything you bring in you carry out. Getting there requires a 4x4 over basic tracks, which keeps the crowds away and the coastline genuinely wild.
