Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art

Mathaf holds one of the world's most significant collections of modern and contemporary Arab art, tracing painting, sculpture and photography from the 1840s through to living artists, and it's free to walk through — you just need to book a ticket online first. It sits inside a former school building on the Education City campus, a much quieter and less architecturally dramatic setting than the National Museum or MIA, which somehow suits the collection: intimate rooms, no crowds, work you won't have seen reproduced everywhere. Reachable by metro to Education City station and a short walk, or the free campus tram.
