Old Amiri Palace
The Old Palace was built in the early 20th century by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, who used the walled compound — three courtyard houses, two reception halls, and service quarters — as both residence and seat of government for roughly a decade. Converted into Qatar's first national museum in 1975, the restoration won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1980, and the structure now sits at the literal center of Jean Nouvel's 2019 National Museum of Qatar building, which wraps around it in a ring of interlocking discs.
