Al Zubarah Archaeological Site & Fort

Al Zubarah was once Qatar's biggest trading and pearl-diving town before it was razed in 1811 and quietly abandoned; what's left is the best-preserved example of that kind of Gulf settlement anywhere in the region, which is why UNESCO listed it in 2013. The restored fort at the entrance houses a small visitor center walking you through the town's layout, then a free shuttle runs you out across the 60-hectare site to see the excavated courtyard houses, mosque foundations, and the old harbor wall where dhows once loaded pearls. There's genuinely no crowd to work around — bring water and a hat, because there's very little shade once you're past the fort.
